Project Description

Walgett Main Street Upgrades

Walgett Shire Council appointed GMU to prepare an urban design study to develop ideas and solutions for the beautification of Walgett’s Main Street. The study focused on capturing the cultural history of Walgett, sense of place and creation of a shared identity for the town centre. The scope included consideration of the existing streetscape, landscape and built form character, perception of safety, activity, lighting and shade. It examined the area for potential open or gathering spaces, public art and community participation and reviewed land use as well as signage and awning design within the town. The analysis went on to inform a series of opportunities and constraint diagrams and assisted in the creation of a new vision for Walgett. This then leads to the production of strategies, demonstrating different approaches to upgrades and built form reflective of the vision of the Walgett Shire Community.
